Mind tricks. Can you solve it?

Ok. I found this thing on BORED.com. I have no idea how this thing works. I've tried it about 100 times, and EVERY time, it's right! Please let me know if you can figure out how this thing works. Here's the link

this is old i know this trick. first ask some say a number 1-10 they pick 5 say add ten then 20 then 10 again. the person who is tricking add up the numbers you are telling them to add at the end just say the number you told them to add. hope i get best answer!

When the symbol appears, pick another number from the list and do it again, not clicking try again, and it will be the exact same symbol. For example, you pick 14 so do 1 + 4 and you get 5. subtract 5 from 14 and you get 9. Say it is a star. Then do the same thing with 71 or 39 or any number and the result is the same star! It tricks, you yes, it does.

Try to figure this one out for yourself on a piece of paper (that is, the actual number then what they add up to beside it) and you will see that they are multiples of nine. They post the same picture on the nines and scatter other pictures on the other numbers. Pure and simple, fooling.
