A girl was asked at her birthday party how old she was and she answered: I was 19 last years new years day and in 2 days I will be 22, when was her birthday?

Her birthday is January 2nd.

Last year on New Year's she was 19.  She then turned 20 the next day.  She turned 21 on January 2nd of this year.  Her birthday party is on December 31st of this year.  Two days from then is January 2nd of the next year, her 22nd birthday.

on new years! "i was 19 last new year's day!" so her b day is on january 1. but that question doesnt make sense still. if she was 19 last year, how is she turning 22 this year?

The key to the question is "last YEAR's New Year's Day", which is different from saying "last New Year's Day".

Right now it's June 2008.  So "last year's New Year's Day" would be Jan. 1, 2007.  If she was 19 then, there has to be at least one birthday in between, but since she's about to turn 22, there have to be 2.

My guess would be her birthday is on Jan. 2?  That way she's 19 on Jan. 1, 2007, turns 20 on Jan. 2, 2007, and then turns 21 on Jan. 2, 2008.  

The question is being asked at her birthday party on Dec. 31, 2008.  I guess she's not holding her party on her actual birthday?  In two days it will be Jan. 2, 2009 and she will turn 22.
