Okay Experts, I recently moved into a home that was a foreclosure , hence no central air components, being that all my money got used up moving in I am using my existing 4 ton air conditioner condensing unit but have a 5 ton air handler its hot in miami so this has to work I hear slowing the fan speed to cut cfm flow and using a TXV will make this work fine, I need all your input concerning drawback if any, THANK YOU ALL

  1. The coil will freeze up or you will have to over charge the system and that will kill the compressor. If this could be done the factory would do it that way. Since Miami is a third world city you can get any body to do a mess up job like that.  You knew it did not have air and should have not bought too much house. Call a real contractor or call the manufacture and tell them what you want to do and see what they think. Since your are broke, you need the best price.

  2. Sounds workable but I hope your using someone qualified to do the installation.

  3. Don't know about slowing down fan speed- but you can reduce the return register size and cut cfm. How much???

  4. It will not work right. You can go as much as a half ton larger only on the indoor coil than the outdoor coil and actually get more latent heat removal but when you get any larger than that ,it just doesn't work right.Your split will be off, your pressures will be off,and it won't cool right. With or without a different TXV and regardless of blower speed.

I've experimented with it on many ocassions.Find a 4 and 1/2 ton coil and it will work like a dream.Good luck.

You could also easily destroy a good compressor with a 4 ton condenser and a 5 ton evaporator coil in a short time.

  5. Don't reduce the air speed.  The faster the cool air moves through the house the faster the heat is carried away and the sooner the AC unit shuts off.  Saves money and compressor works less.  AC units have a wide operating range.
