Mobile phone for Scotland holiday?

Question

My friend and I will be visiting Edinburgh for about 2 weeks in September. We want to be able to call our familes while gone. Would it be best to purchase a cheap phone from a travel site like this http://www.telestial.com/promo/packlite.php or are cheap phones available over there?

When we went to Ireland, we decided to get a phone there and were never able to find a single one for sale. I would like to spend no more than $60US/£30UK on a phone as I'm from the US and most phones here do not work on a GSM network as yours do.

Buy a phone before we get there or once we get there (and any tips on where to find them if so)?

tesco, woolworths and argos all sell cheap mobile phones. if you only want it to call home then you can get one for about £10. just look out for big supermarkets or any electrical shop in the city centre.

id also recommend looking for phone shops around town, you can get very cheap calls abroad, usually advertised in windows. might be cheaper than topping up and buying a new phone.

You would be cheaper buying the phone you linked to.  To phone America using a British sim card will cost you a lot whereas that one seems to have some kind of deal.  Also there are no roaming charges on that which is great and your text messages are cheaper.  

Stick with your link there!  The phone may be cheaper to buy over here but it will cost you a fortune in call charges :)

Some of the major supermarkets in the UK are selling basic phones, nothing fancy at cheap prices for  ÃƒÂ‚£10 or less. It depends what you want the phone to do, if its just to call home or to use text then these will be ok, you will have to buy your credit as well, i would imagine calls to the U.S will be quite expensive though. Hope this is of some help to you. Enjoy Edinburgh it is a lovely city, and Scotland is a lovely country.
