Question:

Models and society?

In society, it seems one must be very thin in order to be considered beautiful. Just look at a magazine or TV ad. It is said these leads to eating disorders in girls that try to immitate this "beauty" Yet, in the real world I see a lot of overweight young women instead. If society said that larger women were the picture of beauty, would we have skinnier people?

Am I making any sence here?

  1. No. no sense at all.

If "society said that larger women were the picture of beauty," I doubt there would be a skinny girl on the face of the earth.

Gaining weight is easy and enjoyable. That's why there's so many fat people, not because of some subconscience mumbo-jumbo

  2. i don't think so just b/c of all the greasy food there is out there.  and many people eat late night then sleep which is not healthy at all. i just wish it were like the 50's and 60's when the woman was voluminous and were considered s**y. for example Marlin Monroe was a size nine and was considered s**y...now a size 9 may consern a woman in being (excuse the word) fat.

  3. I think part of society see's being underweight as a factor of beauty, but an equally large part of society see's being underweight as a medical problem, often a psychological disorder. If being thin is beautiful, why are thin, underweight, anorexic or size zero women so often mocked by individuals and the media? I can not think of a single friend who thinks an under weight person is attractive.

There are more overweight people than underweight people because as humans, our natural instinct tells us to consume calories. In a world where we would usually hunt for food and only stop to reproduce or sleep, we were burning enough calories to be able to constantly aim to get some food, today, it is just on a shelf and packed with more fat and sugar than ever, but that natural instinct is still there, which is why almost all of us have experienced binge eating. If there is high calorie food available, our bodies want to get as much as possible before it's gone. Some people have no problem over riding this natural instinct in order to remain at a normal weight, other people find it hard, other people develop a repulsion to eating.

  4. Reverse psychology!   Brilliant!

  5. If I heard this right on a news program a few months ago. The trend to be thin like your typical model is changing. Women who actually have curves ( not bones jutting out) and a genuine healthy appearance are the ones men are wanting to be with. This goes goes back in time when women who were skinny were seen as undesirable, Diseased and such, where as women with wide hips and "curves" were deemed Healthy able to carry on the race and pass on good gene's and traits. This does not mean men want women who are obese, they want ones who are say, in the middle. They are not skinny but yet not obese.

To answer below: It is a fact in history and Anthropology. Iknow its out here on the net. I'm just not well versed on the net as most people.

  6. I know those models don't represent the average woman. They typically are teenagers who are selected because they have a specific body type that looks good in clothes. They are tall and very thin. I've heard another reason they are selected is because most fashion designers are g*y men and these young women look the most like the boys that they are really designing for.

  7. Sense... no.... sence I am not sure... :)

  8. Models are sickly thin because they make the clothes look better and people tend to look at the clothes as opposed to the woman.  I do not think the majority of society believes these women are the ideal of beauty.  However I do not think we should validate and condone unhealthy weights regardless if they are over or under weight.

  9. No I don't think that we would have more skinnier people if it was reversed because its easier for people to gain weight and become heavier than it is for people to lose weight and become smaller. That's why there are more overweight people especially in America.

  10. there isn't anything wrong with any woman as long as they are healthy- runway models are the only woman I would ever be concerned about. I was once a runway models measurement when i was 14 and hadn't really hit puberty yet. A full grown woman should not have those measurements.

    but you are right

When you bring it all together there will always be ideals in society- Is it right that a woman has to put herself under the knife because she doesn't like the way her face looks? Is it right that a little girl is tormented because of her sclerosis? Really all physical ideals should be removed because even if we idealize ahem* "healthy woman", we will be having skinny woman force feeding themselves and getting heart disease.
