Modem/Router problem?

I have been using the seimens modem for my dsl connection through at&t yahoo. I recently purchased a gateway 2wire modem/router so I can hook up my laptop to the dsl connection. The problem I am having is that when I hook up the 2wire it will not connect with my dsl. It is saying I do not have an active connection. But I am able to connect with the seimens modem. Do I have to change the modem I am using with the server or does anyone know how to fix this. Please help I really do not want to be on the phone with tech support all aftenoon.

  1. Usually you have to configure your router for it to be able to connect to your modem. I'm not familiar with either of those routers but I will try to help. First of all, do you have a desktop computer that doesn't need the router and does your internet work on that computer? If it does, that's good news. What you need to do is open the properties/options, etc. of your router on your laptop and make sure you enter the correct network key.

Make sure that the network key is typed EXACTLY as you have created it. Otherwise, it will not establish a connection.

I could go into more detail about more ways to fix it, but let's see if this works for now. Update your question if you need more help.

  2. hi it looks like its a setup thing,  read thru the following forum chat to get ideas of the right setup [ps keep the modem]

to disable the router portion of a 2wire modem/router:

    goto http://gateway.2wire.net/managment

    under Advanced – Configure Services

    uncheck disable routing

you will now configure your login/pass to the dsl on your new router

check the gateway site for setup info then look thru dslreports.com for specific setup guides for your parts.

i have not installed this type of setup

  3. You need to disconnect the original modem and then connect the dsl router to the line. you then need to set up your ISP login information.
