Money matter: $10k?

when talking about money...$10k is $10000? Or what? What is the origin of this expression?

Back in the 60's when computers became more common the introduction of term 2k   4k  etc were tossed around when speaking of memory and yes there was a time when 4 k was a lot.  That crept into conversation when discussing money and so 10k was 10,000.
