  1. Stock up when things are on sale.  Buy store brands when their quality is similar to the national brands.  Combine cupons with store sales for the best savings.

For savings on meat, look for manager specials, which are often meat that is fine, but has an expiration date that is nearing, maybe a week away.  If you eat it that night, or freeze it, what do you care about an approaching expiration date?

We AVERAGE savings of 60% by shopping this way.

Drive your cars until they are annoyingly unreliable.  Car payments eat up money.

  2. grow you're own veg

    make you're own bread

walk to the shops, dont take the car

dont put the heating on so often in the winter - invest in some really think blankets.

  3. A full frig runs less., I keep 1/2 gallons of water in mine it helps store the cold.

  4. Start by keeping proper accounts so you understand where your money is going.  Then you will have a good idea of where you can make cut backs and save.

  5. My biggest savings has come from consolidating my trips to do shopping and save on our gas bill. I used to just randomly go into town and ramble around from store to store where now we start at the closest store with a shopping list and make a loop saving groceries for last stops.

While it isn't for everyone, I find going to yard sales & flea markets one heck of a savings, but it takes a little bartering skills and knowing what to look for.

  6. Reduce, reuse and recycle

I take a good look at items before I put them either in the trash or recycle.  I like to try to repurpose as much as possible.  As an example, I use whiskey pour spouts on bottles that would go into recycle and then reuse them to hold dishsoap, vinegar, oil, bath oil, etc.

Only run full loads in the dishwasher and wash because it takes just as much energy to run a full load as it does a partial one with the exception of filling the washing machine with more water.

Use solar lighting in the yard for security and to save energy.  Use motion detector lighting instead of leaving on porch lights.

Grow your own veggies and herbs then share with your neighbors. They soon will be bringing you things they grow and you don't

OPG - Use other people's gas.  If you know someone makes regular runs (dropping off and picking up kids from school) ask them to pick up items you need on their way.  Ask them whether they need something when you go out in exchange.

Invest in an attic fan, ceiling fans or window tint.  I use a combination of them and have saved more than I spent on them because I don't have to run my AC

Collect and save water.  If you have to run the shower to warm the water, collect it to use for other purposes, like watering plants.  Collect rainwater for the same purpose.

Make errands count.  Figure the route out for the most efficient use of gas and make sure you have more than one errand to run.

Reuse plastic spray bottles.  Buy products in bulk and then refill the same plastic spray bottle.  Make your own vinegar and water solutions in reused spray bottles to clean kitchens, bathrooms and windows.

Morph meals, use the main ingredients from one meal to morph into another later in the week.  Reheating food takes less energy than when you originally cook, roast or bake it.

If you have automatic sprinklers, invest in a drip irrigation system to save water

If you live in an area that gets hard freezes and your water heater is subjected to cold, blanket it to keep in the heat.  Insulating pipes saves energy too.

Use motion detection nightlights instead of turning on lights at night.

Ask other people whether they can use what you no longer need.  For example, Operation Homefront matches the needs of military families with items you may have but don't need.  I got a new Christmas tree last year and my old one got a new home with children whose mom was deployed to Iraq.

I cut coupons and take the amount I saved on groceries and put it into my savings account.  Saved enough to go abroad several times over the years and bought a car cash, too.
