Question:

Moth balls to kill copperhead? ?

There is a copperhead in my shed, and he stays there all the time. I was wondering if I put moth balls right inside the door, will it kill the snake? My husband doesn't want me to kill it, because he doesn't like to kill any animal. And I am not going to call animal control. But if the moth balls won't work, what would work? The shed isn't real big, so it doesn't have much room to go anywhere. Please help because I hate the thing!

  1. Aaa so you have a copper head.  You must live near water...  They are very beautiful snakes and also very poisones.  If you have some moth balls then I would put them around the shed whever you go.  It is true "snake-away" is made of moth balls and lime.  So,  Put the moth balls around the lawn mower and sprinkle lime around the outside of the shed.  If that doesn't work, the next step is to go to the spc and get a cat or all three.  Good luck, don't be scaired but take a cell phone to the shed with you just in case you need to dial nine !!

  2. no it wont kill the snake..but i have been told that moth balls have the same ingredients in them that snake away does..its supposed to make them not like the area and leave..i would call animal control..they wont kill they snake they will remove the snake..you need to seal up the shed so that it cannot get in again

  3. I wish this persistent myth about mothballs and snakes would finally disappear from our galaxy.  It's sooooo bogus.  Especially when you are talking about copperheads.  This is a poisonous snake and you should call animal control immediately.  I'm concerned for your safety.

  4. Why don't you want to call animal control? They can help you get a trapper to capture it and take it elsewhere. That takes care of your problem and keeps hubby happy because it's not being killed.

As for mothballs, understand that they are really poisonous and you may end up killing a pet, other animals which may get in such as squirrels or even a child if he/she happens to pick one up and pop it in its mouth.

As for you, be careful going around the shed. The snake will come out to hunt, to warm up and to travel in its territory. Another thought - if it comes out, cover any hole it uses to enter and exit with screening or nail a piece of wood over the hole. Once its out and finds it can't get back in, it will move on.

  5. Your husband is right.  Too many people kill for no good reason.  You are right.  Copperheads are dangerous snakes and can make you really sick.  Call animal control or the humane society.  Its the right thing to do if either of you are unsure how to catch and release yourselves.
