If I take a 50cc CBT, when I go for the Practical test, Can I take it on a 125cc or higher Bike, If I am the legal age to ride it.

125cc Licence Covers All Bikes ?

I have heard of "Direct Access" Courses, but this takes a week, are there any alternative certifications.

Any suggestions.

  1. If you are planning on taking your practical test I would advise that you take your CBT on a 125cc (unless you are 16 which would mean you have to take it on a 50cc), this is the biggest bike you can ride on CBT. The CBT costs on average £100 plus and is valid for 2 years when you pass. You can go straight in for your test after CBT if you wanted as long as you have your theory test as well.

The motorcycle theory costs £30 and you need to book through the DSA (Driving standards agency). Here is a link for you to book it: http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/Mot...

You have two choices, depending on age, for the practical test.

There is the DAS (Direct Access) which is where you take the training on about a 500-600cc bike. You need to be aged 21yrs or over. Most school offer a minimum of 2-3 days training with your test on the following day which can cost anything from about £400 and upwards. After this you can ride any bike you like with no restrictions. You have to take this with a qualifies DAS instructor.

There is also the A2 test which you would take on a 125cc. You need to be aged 17yrs or over. You don't have to book a course with a training school if you took this as you don't have to be with a qualified instructor (your CBT will entitle you take this course as you can ride a 125cc with this) but I would advise you do take some training with an instructor. If you did book with a school then the training and course will most likely run exactly the same as the Direct Access, you will just be on a smaller bike. It is slightly cheaper to take this at an average of £380 and upwards as a 125cc is cheaper to run than a 500cc. The only difference between this and the direct access is:

    1) the size of the bike you take the test on

    2) the price

    3) taking the A2 test would mean that you will be restricted to a 33bhp for 2 years when you pass. You can still ride absolutely any bike you want you just got to make sure that, if the bike you get is more than 33bhp, you fit t with a restrictor kit. After 2 years being restricted, it will be automatically lifted from your licence and you can ride any bike, with no restriction.

The test is changing in October , so if you want to take it before it changes the I will strongly advise you get in now as most schools are either fully booked already or have a limited number of tests available.

  2. If you take your test on a 125cc you'll be restricted...if you do the DAS then you can ride anything. And I did training Monday Tuesday Wednesday and passed my test Thurs morning so doesn't really take that long....training was 9:30 - 2pm so not even a full day.

  3. ''If I take a 50cc CBT, when I go for the Practical test, Can I take it on a 125cc or higher Bike, If I am the legal age to ride it.''.....yes to that question.

''125cc Licence Covers All Bikes ?''...no to that one.....

pass your full test on a 125 and your stuck to a 33 bhp power limit.....

pass your test on a bigger machine[around a 600cc/55bhp]  thats the direct accsess corse, once passed then you can ride anything....this is always the best, but most costly of the two...hope this helps.

    EDIT...

as laws are changing later this year ide get in sharpish,as i dont know what the changes are yet but im going to find out from an offical so i can be sure of my answers...

  4. Also, 125 license does not work for all bikes.  You will need a class M for 250cc and higher.

  5. direct access is open to over 21 s if you want access to any size motorbike, it should take three days with your test on the third day ,the test changes on 1 10 2008 ,its more complex takes longer and costs more than it does now (450£)involving a ride and excersice completeion before an accompanied ride on the roads suggest you buy a RIDE mag or BIKE they regularly update on the new test . if your under 21 you are restricted to 33bhp but there are exclusions buy a highway code and the details are in there

  6. I don't understand what you mean, really.

At 17, you should be taking the CBT on a 125, allowing you to ride a 125 on L plates for two years, or until you take a full test.

If you take your CBT on a 50 when you're 16, it becomes valid for 125s when you reach 17.

  7. If you take a CBT on a 50cc and are over 17 then you can ride a 125cc though it would be better to do the CBT on the 125cc as you will have to learn to master the gears as well.

If you take your test on a 125cc you are restricted to riding a bike with a 33Bhp output for two years after that you can ride what you want.

If you are over 21 you can learn on a bigger bike (usually 500cc) and when you pass can ride anything you want.

More information can be found in the top link.

The test is changing and I have included the link below to the DSA that explains it at length.
