Question:

Moulting budgies?

My two male budgies seem to take turns moulting, mostly the little fluffy feathers but occassionally the big feathers. They never eat the fresh foods/fruits I offer them, they just ignore it, and they both hate the bath. They nibble their cuttlefish and vitamin block but their main diet is seeds with millet and treats. Do you use the water supplements? Do you recommend these? Is there anything I can try? Or is this normal moulting, I've only had them since March and my previous budgie moulted very little. Thank you!

  1. My budgies moult all the time - usually the small fluffy ones - the mess drives me crazy!

I have never tried fresh foods/fruits, but you can buy a dried herb mix, mine seem to like that.  You can get it at most good pet stores like Pets at Home.

I sometimes put a feather conditioner in their bath - again from Pets at Home.  How big is the bath?  I have one that clips on the side of the cage and they love to hop in, it did take some time for them to get used to it though.

  2. This is perfectly normal. Different budgies moult different amount. If you are worried you could your for other symptoms of french moulting disease which you will find on the internet . My birds never use their bath either. You could try different fruits and vegetables and see if they like any, they normally prefer things you can peck at like carrot or broccolli. You could try chopping it up and putting it in their seed. If they really won't eat anything you could try the seed that has dried fruit and veg in or supplements. It is normal for them to just eat seed and treats, and you could use this as a chance to train them, by getting them to eat off your hands. Also, to help with their moulting, you can get them squirters which mine really enjoy, but don't spray them later on in the day as they can get cold.

  3. The molting doesn't sound like problem.unless they are getting bald patches, If they are not eating fresh food I would say a vitamin that goes in the water would be a good idea. Sometimes extra vitamins can help with the molting process.

Alot of birds are not comfotable using those hook on baths.....you could  try a small very swallow dish on the bottom of their cage or give them a bath by misting them with a mister.
