I am looking to spend no more than £200 on a mountain bike that will be used for general use, no heavy trails or dirt riding etc just getting about in general. Please can you advise which of these bikes would be best for under £200.

Thanks

  1. I have had 2 cheap bikes ( 120 quid ish ) from halfords and both basically fell to pieces withing a couple of months.

Last mountain bike i bought was from toys r us ( weirdly) cost 60 quid and its been great. Ive had it for about a year with no problems.

  2. I had a quick look, that site is really expensive. If you have a Halfords near you, go there and you can pick up a really good rigid mountain bike (you won't really need suspension if you're just getting about) for under £200.

edit - I've had my current front suspension mountain bike for two years now, bought it from Halfords in the sale for £80 and no problems yet.

  3. If you are not riding on trails, but mainly roads then a hybrid bike might be better. This will have tyres that aren't all bulgy and knobbly which will make it a lot easier to ride since less energy will be wasted on rolling resistance.

  4. i would recomend a carrer vulcan v spec i have one as a back up for my kona, i think people who bad mouth halfods talk c**p to be blunt yes i will agree dont talk to the 20 year old trainners who thing they know evevry thing just buy the bike from there dont get them to assemble it or if you do check every thing before riding, the carrera are the same spec as my kona plus people who look down at halfords probly have a £700+ bike and use it more for serious of roading, but the carrera range were givern 5 out of 5 in the bike mag for the quality ad i 100% agree check the web site out and please let me know what you think. :-)

  5. okay well ive been mountain biking since i was about 5 and regularly do racing and stuff so i could probably help u a bit here. I would suggest not going for the bikes on that website as they do seem a bit too expensive for what you would need...a lot of people are saying halfords...well to be honest ive never bought a bike from there and i dont think i ever will coz the bikes there are normally sold to people who dont know how to get a better deal....i would suggest evanscycles.com   which is a site with loads of bikes which offten has big sabvings on certain bikes they also have stores around the country...also try ebay but be careful about what u bid for...anyways i would say a hardtail (front suspension only) or a hybrid bike would be best for you and if you are looking for something under £200 i think this would be a good deal http://www.evanscycles.com/products/shog... <--- this is probably the best value bike thats on sale and under £200    if u got any questions email me on Elliiot@hotmail.co.uk  hope i helped ;D

  6. Contrary to popular belief, you don't need an mountain bike to ride on the road.  You need a mountain bike to go mountain biking (but I've taken my Fuji road bike on some pretty ruff stuff).  I'd even say that you would be fine with an X-Mart bike.  200 quid is about 395-400 USD (if my conversions are correct) which is more than any of my friends, who actually go mountain biking, have spent on their bikes (I do more than them and I got my self a better bike).  I never recommend a department store bike to anyone except people who pointlessly want a MTB.  I would recomend something like a 200 quid Urban/city bike or road bike (this link will show you what I mean by urban/city bike http://www.fisherbikes.com/bike/category... )

  7. heres is a selection of mountain bike which would be good for general use, good quality bike from respectable names.

    Trek 3500 2008, alpine bikes £200

    Gt Palomar 2008 £199

Mongoose Rockadile AL Mens 2008 £179

evenscycles has got a huge selection of bike so will be worth while having a look there as well if the above bike dont tickle your fancy.
