My mum just told me we are moving to LA for her work. I've lived in Australia my hole life. I'm really upset about leaving my friends but now I've been researching a bit im also positive and a bit excited. I think my mum wants to move to Santa Monica or somewhere near their. So I was wondering what are the good High Schools near there, I'm really into drama so I want to go to a school with a good drama but It also has tto have a good academic record. Also what's LA particular Santa monica and sorounding areas like. Where do teens my age(14) hangout and what are some fun things to do. I'm so nervous btw I'm not going to next year.

  1. The Santa Monica High School is the public school you will be placed in if you don't go to a private school. Academically, the school is pretty good. I'm sure the drama department is also fine.

The only setback I can think of, though, is the violence that goes on at that school. I don't know if your family will be able to afford other areas, but if they can, I would suggest that you settle in a area where there is less crime such as Calabasas, Malibu, certain parts of Pasadena, parts of Glendale, Burbank, Arcadia (this city has a nationally ranked school, Arcadia High School), Sierra Madre, Monrovia, Marina Del Ray, Agoura Hills, West Los Angeles, La Crescenta, La Canada Flintridge, San Marino, or South Pasadena.

Some of the cities I mentioned are in what is called the San Gabriel Valley, which is generally no more than 30 miles outside of L.A. It's a short drive to the Los Angeles area. I know that is a lot to take in, especially for someone like you who is coming from Australia. I just thought it would be helpful to mention my insight because I see this situation with a lot of people. Many people who come to L.A. automatically choose to live in a familiar-sounding area like Santa Monica or Los Angeles itself. They don't realize off the bat that Los Angeles is a big county, and, you can get around quicker than you would think. It's okay not to live in the exact location that is Los Angeles. Know that there are plenty of things to do (malls, theaters, bowling alleys, social hangouts, etc.) all around Southern California. So living in the areas I've mentioned won't be like living in no man's land. On the contrary, they're actually pretty lively and populated.

Then again, moving to the areas I've mentioned might cost a bit more (or not; Santa Monica isn't a cheap place to live in). That's just another aspect that must be considered. You could also consider Orange County. It's a bit farther from L.A., but it's a better place to grow up and it has great schools and low crime rates. When you say that you are moving to L.A., do you mean it in a literal sense, or the L.A. area? Because if it's the latter (say, your mom's work is not actually in L.A., but in an area north or south of L.A.), then the options I've laid out would make a lot of sense.

Good luck with the big move as it may not be easy. Southern California is the best place (at least I think so) to live.

  2. not much  to do here if you're 14 other than going to the beach every day.  hopefully  the public schools are not assicioated with the LAUSD, otherwise a private school would be your best choice.

  3. Santa Monica high I think is a great school (its change a bit since I went there (I gradrated in 1974) but its still have some great teachers

there is also some private schools (crossroads I hear is pretty good)

Santa Monica is also near the beach

  4. I am not sure about the schools. If you do not go to a private school, you will be placed in the nearest public school to where you live. Santa Monica schools are good overall for basic education. As for drama and acting, you might just try to enroll in a separate school for that.

The teens hang out at the Third Street Promenade from what I see. It's a great shopping and entertainment area.

  5. OMG YOU SHOULD BE SOOOO EXCITED....

ive been begging my mom to move me to toluca lake LA. be careful looking at public schools there- the gangs are bad. im 14 btw. ive always wanted to move to a big city and be by the water and LA is exactly where i want to me. ive already decided that im going to UCLA or USC just so i can  be by there...
