What is the population of mud turtles now and from the past, and why do you think there was a decline?

  1. I have no idea how many there are but I'm sure you are right that they are in decline. The 2 main contributors should be habitat loss and pollution. They usually prefer the smaller waterways that are affected more strongly by run-off and flooding. As man has developed more closely to streams, he has taken away alot of the natural flood protection the forests provide. Mud turtles are predators feeding on small invertebrates such as worms, young crayfish and insect larvae all are susceptible to pollution.  This is just part of what happens in the wild.
