A major impact , he was the biggest name in the sport and in some ways he still is. Movies were made after him and even people who dont follow boxing at all are familar with him. The man is a legend and his name is recognized by everyone all over the world.

More than being a first class athlete, Ali was a man of principles and he stood by them even if it meant losing all his fame and glory as an athlete.  He was stripped of his title in '67 and wasn't allowed to box for the next 3 and a half years - the peak of his career - because of his refusal to go to war.  When civil rights leaders e.g. Martin Luther King were getting killed, he never wavered and continued fighting racial injustice.  During his time and even in today's generation, no superstar athlete in his right mind would dare stand up against the government and fight for principles and risk losing his status, his endorsements, his money and even his friends.  But Ali came back from his exile and did even more greater things in and out of the ring.  Today, even as his body is being ravaged by Parkinson's, he continues with his humanitarian work and touches lives by his great example.  What a great man indeed!
