Multiculturalism Paper...TOPICS???

Question

im writing a paper on multiculturalism for a sociology class and how it is positive for the United States. but im stuck on what topics to write about. i know i can write about different cultures and traditions. BUT what else??

Write on whether or not America has a distinct identifiable culture, or are we a loosely coupled mix of many subcultures.  Talk about why you feel either way.

while i like what the second poster used as a topic, if you dont want to go that route, here are a few other ideas...

1) the globalization movement and the importance of cultural awareness in a variety of different arenas (business, politics, entertainment)

2) immigration and the different responses to it both positive and negative stressing the notions of what it means to be an American

3) The notion of the American dream - whether it is attainable and how visions of what that dream is are manifested by cultural understandings and if different understandings are conducive to reaching that goal

There are some others, but i think you probably have a few good jumping off points if you want to use them from different responders in the question.

Integration, mixed marriages.  It sounds like your professor wants your opinion on the positive effects of multiculturalism; I wouldn't write about cultures and traditions.  I would start by saying we are more tolerant of people who are different from us because of our unique diversity.  Multiculturalism introduces different values and ethics.  I would definitely research on integration in schools; I think you might be able to elaborate and shape the information you will find to fit your paper.  I hope this helps.  Good luck!
