Question:

Multiple line quotes from poems?

How can you quote text from multiple lines in a poem. Mainly non-enjambed lined i.e. lines that DO have punctuation at the end. And mainly ones with strong punctuation (e.g . ! ? )

I need to quote "The Charge of the Light Brigade" where it says

Cannon to the right of them,

Cannon to the left of them,

Cannon in front of them

And where it says

Honour the charge they made!

Honour the Light Brigade,

Noble six hundred!

I don't want to use multiple quotes such as

He said "Honour the charge they made!" and also "Honour the Light Brigade,"

But rather all in one quote.

Is this possible?

Thankyou

  1. The actions of the Light Brigade defines Honour.

  2. Put a slash mark (sometimes called a shill) between the lines. For example:

In "The Charge of the Light Brigade" Tennyson describes the impossible position of the troops: "Cannon to the right of them, / Cannon to the left of them, / Cannon in front of them." Later in the poem he writes, "Honor the charge they made! / Honor the Light Brigade, / Noble six hundred." Here Tennyson... [etc.]

This way you respect the line ends and retain the enjambment. Of course, if you are indenting the quotation, you

    need not worry about slashes.

Is this what you wanted to know?

  3. yes everthing is possible
