  1. Well, you have several options. The Oktoberfest starts on Saturday the 22nd, so you will be getting there on Friday - the day before it starts. Munich will already be in the party mood. Now, depending on what time you arrive, if early enough on Friday then head over to the Tourist Office at the main train station and ask about last minute cancelations - They will ask you your price range. I know EVERY body will tell you that is crazy because all the hotels are booked. That is true, BUT for example bus tours often  have guests missing so the local hotels have empty rooms at the last minute. I have gotten some real good deals that way.

Ok, so you do not want to do last minute. The Hostel is a good suggestion, but I doubt you will be able to rest your drunken head at those 'cheap' places. The hostels and camping grounds are full of younger 'Guests' and those deliteful Gentlemen from the dominions of the Brittish Empire that party very hardy and loudly until the wee hours of the dawn. Then again, that may not bother you if you are drunk enough that you can pass out.

Check out the fest website: www.oktoberfest.de(in German and English) and start looking for cheap hotels. But, you should know that because of the fest,  ALL hotels rooms in Munich and surrounding areas are more exspensive - anywhere from 10 to 30 percent more.

Since I am past of the age of passing out and prefer sleeping the night away, I stay at a better class hotel which is not cheap so I can not recomend it. But, a rule of thumb with hotels in Munich and the fest is that, the cheaper the room is, then it is farther away from the fest grounds or as the locals call it; 'Die Wies'n'.

Another 'method' of finding a cheap room and maybe breakfast is check out the message boards in that website. There are always people willing to rent rooms. I know one family in Munich who leaves town during the fest. They rent out their condo and parking places to fest visitors - they make enough money to pay for their vacation.

A few other tips; Wear comfortable walking shoes that you do mind getting dirty and maybe wet. Depending on which tent you end up at  - it gets crazy. Avoid the Italian men. I know that is profiling, but trust me I have seen and been involved with enough bad episodes with those guys that I stay clear of them. Some more 'profiling'; If you happen to end up at a table with some Irishmen, or any of those Gents who have a picture of the Queen of England on their Money DO NOT TRY and keep up with their beer drinking, unless you are experienced or have had your liver removed. I made that mistake one year and I am still trying to figure out what happened to those 2 days of my life.

I assume you will be traveling alone so I based my answers on that. Email me if you have more specific questions. Have fun and good luck!

  2. Meininger Hostel

This is a great hostel. A dormitary bed costs €16.50

Included in the price is: an all you can eat breakfast, bed sheets and towel, TV in the room, free walking tour, locker, use of the kitchen and there is a free film every night.

Make sure that wherever you choose, you book early because the hostels fill up very early (and prices go up)

  3. if you book now you might get into the Wombats City Hostel or the Euro City Hostel (both very highly rated on Hostelworld.com)

Wombats was voted no 1 Hostel worldwide in 2006 ... so it's VERY good - I stayed there last year for the Munich Beer Festival, and it was brilliant, even better than the Circus Hostel in Berlin.

and they cost about £10 to £16 a night ...

    Hope that helps

  4. Hotel Amba, Arnulfstrasse.  The first place I stayed in Munich.

  5. You can try Hotel Uhland http://www.hotel-uhland.de/munich-fair-f...

Cheap rooms.  Free Breakfast & Coffee.  A quick walk to the Fairgrounds.

  6. book far in advance!  Hotels and hostel fill up very very fast.  Keep in mind prices also differ during Oktoberfest and will be a little bit more expensive than regular priced.  If you don't mind you can always stay a little bit ourside of the city center.

  7. You can find the best cheap hostels in Munich here:

    http://www.inside-munich.com/munich-chea...

For Oktoberfest, I'd recommend to make your reservations as soon as possible. It tends to get very crowded :-)

  8. Hi, book early and try www.hrs.de

I got a room 150€€ cheaper than directly in the hotel.

Take a hotel not direct in the city. Look for a hotel out of Munich and s-bahn (railway) connection. S-Bahn-connections are very good in that area.
