Question:

My Computer is acting funny?

Hi, my E-machines 420 computer is faulty, sometimes on booting up, it reboots itself and a Windows screen comes up asking if you want to start normally or in safe mode.

If you choose to start normally, it boots up into Windows in the normal manner. The fault only appears to affect the boot up of the PC but occasionally it boots normally.

Any Ideas??????

  1. You have a faulty driver or hardware that is not initializing properly. You can check your event viewer to see if any messages point to the possible culprit.  Just go to Start->Run and type eventvwr.msc then click ok. Then peruse the entries in the event log and see if any point to a failure (these are usually marked with warning icons).  If no clues there, then upgrade your video driver, as these are notorious for causing this problem.   You can also check for updates or reinstall any sound or network drivers. If still no solution, disconnect anything connected to the computer other than the keyboard and mouse and see what it does on boot.  If the problem disappears then the issue is with one of the devices you disconnected.

  2. From the command prompt (Start | Run | then type "cmd"

    type this:

    chkdsk c: /f

chkdsk is a program the looks at your drive and fixes any problems

c: is your boot drive (the one you'd like looked at)

/f means "fix the problems, instead of just reporting them to me".

When you type "chkdsk c: /f" it'll ask you to reboot or perform the task on next boot, because it can't run on a "running" system. When you then reboot, it will run a disk check and fix any problems - with any luck, that'll fix your issue.

[Don't listen to Bon Gart - he sounds like a computer repair salesman... pies to that. ]

Update: Try chkdsk before you go on a driver trip. It has NOTHING at all to do with your sound/graphic/network drivers. I promise you.

  3. It could be your power supply.

    It could be your RAM

It could be errors on your Harddrive

It could be a virus/spyware infection

It could be a loose cable.

    It could be misseated RAM

What it is... is overdue for bringing into a computer shop for a complete diagnostic.
