  5. The only DeCuba in the early census was born in Italy.  The name is pretty rare.

You cannot know whether or not your first ancestor who took the name De Cuba was Spanish/Cuban, or of Italian or any other nationality, unless you research your family lineage, it is the only way to be certain, you cannot take the supposed origin of a last name, possibly from around 700 years ago, and work down to yourself, it is a quite meaningless exercise.
