My Sisters Hamster Just Died?!?!?

Question

WHY?!

*The past two days all she did was sleep (we have somebody up in my house at all hours so we know she only slept).

*She never opened/couldn''t open her eyes unless I used a wet q-tip.

*Didn't burrow ever. Just slept.

*Didn't really eat either. Drank once in a while.

We've only had her a week! She was a present for my 8 year old sister passing school.

Unfortunately things like that just happen. Ive had quite a few hamsters in my day and they have lived with me from an hour to two years. Seems like he had a pre-existing condition the petstore didn't catch. Its hard to tell a healthy hamster from a sick one, they just come and go. I know my local petstores don't check up on the hamsters or do tests like they do on the birds, fish, and reptiles. That happened to a friend of mines hamster once as well. A week later the hamster began to grow tumors, as did the other one living in the cage. Im sorry for her loss, sometimes it happens. God Bless!!

Majority of hamsters bought from pet stores die from a condition called Wet Tail. This is a bacterial infection that is caused in young hamsters when they are weaned too quickly from their mothers or if they are kept with other hamsters in the same cage at the pet shop where one could have the disease and spread it to the rest.

I am very sorry that your pet died. But there is nothing you could have done about it. I think you should complain to the pet shop you bought her from so that they can atleast make sure that none of their other hamsters have any sickness. Ideally they should replace your dead hammy with a healthier one since it was only one week since you bought her from the pet store.
