My american family?

hey. im a 15 year old boy. i was born and raised in killkenny. everyonce and a while i go to america because i have some cousins and family there. they were born in america, but they are very proud of their irish blood. to me, this is slightly pathetic. is that terrible? i mean, if your born in america your american. if your born in ireland your irish. am i right?

  1. No, I mean some peoples parents move from america to somewhere else right before they are born then have that person then move back. That person probably conciders them self American. Or if some one was born in one country and moves to another then lives they're whole lives in that other country. Besides  your cousins are just proud of they're roots there's nothing wrong with that.


  2. no america is a mix of many different races and with that means that u cant live in ur home country and ur place u live now i think its important when u live away from ur homeland to be proud and do things that u would do bc thats what makes you but its ok to feel that way just remember just bc they dont live with you doesnt mean they cant do the same things you do

  3. No. The whole idea of America is that it is a melting pot of people from all different cultures all over the world. People in America have heritages that go back to other countries which they choose to express and be proud of in addition to their American hertiage.

  4. I'm somewhat Irish. And no....almost everyone in America didn't start off here. I'm Irish, Scottish, Swedish, German, French, British and Spanish, BUT I'm a citizen of America. Yes, I'm American, but I'm also alot of other things. It isn't pathetic that you're cousins are proud to be Irish. I'm proud to be everything I am, but I'm mostly proud of being French. In my house, all we speak is French.

  5. People admire the Irish very much...for their great artists, their humour and their passion....therefore anyone with irish roots is rightly proud of the fact.

  6. most people in the states dont have a lineage of native born generations that are more than a few generations, so theyre able to connect with the previous generations that came to this country and they remember their traditions because there is not much of a deep culture in present day america.

  7. No America is slightly over 200 years old. So many family's still pass the we are Irish or we are Italian bull c**p on too their children, and many areas or towns in the U.S are still populated by mainly people of German, Italian, Irish, etc. heritage. Especially the older towns on the North East coast.

  13. No it's not pathetic at all.  I'm not sure if I can explain it but the best I can do is say our ancestors are still our ancestors even if they're in another country. You are still in the country of your ancestors so it may seem like they are trying to be something they're not.  That's really not the case.  They have Irish blood just as you do and if they're proud of that, well so be it.  By the way, I'm sure you know the Irish were not regarded very highly in America when they first came here (Irish need not apply) and so forth, so the Irish immigrants became I guess proud because of the hardships they faced hence the "proud to be Irish" bumper stickers and such.  So Irish pride is particularly a "thing" in America.  Hope that helps.

  14. I guess i can see where you are coming from.

    I am a black woman and get annoyed when black people try to claim their African ancestry. Because the reality is that as a race of people you can not get anymore American then being the ones who built the foundation of this country.

      So I can see that you have great pride in your Irish heritage and feel a certain way when your most likely privileges American relatives get to claim the best of both worlds.

    But keep in mind that everyone wants to belong to something that is uniquely theirs and at times saying I am American does not adequately describe a persons looks, or cultural foundation so i can see why people come to America and are Americans but still want to identify with the roots of their ancestors and or forefathers.

  15. My mom is from mexico and I was born in the states. Im a proud half mexican, and I married a Circassian who was born in the states but has Circassian blood and grew up in Jordan. Yeah, papers say hes "american" but it doesnt mean hes blonde and blue-eyed or whatever. He is very proud of his ethnicity- so if they are proud to have irish blood and live in the states, let them be.

    american is the term used when one is proud of there country and they believe in the rights and feel other countries should do the same. we all just happen to live in one area

    im polish, grandparents were born in poland.

    i am oh so greatful i am polish, we have great family traditions. and keilbasa and chinia are AWSOME!

    I was born in the Netherlands but my parents are African so i am originally African i call myself African/Dutch

  19. Technically they ARE American, but their ancestors are from Ireland, so they are Irish American (kinda like saying African American). They aren't from their, but their ancestors are.

    What is wrong with being proud of 'your' past?

  20. no, that's not bad. you see, in america, everyone comes from different herritages - so irish root and born in america is Irish American. They have a right to be proud of their roots!

Their nationality may be American, but their ethnicity is Irish.  Nothing wrong about that at all.  I'm Filipino, but born in America, therefore making me Filipino American.  I'm not ashamed to represent my ancestors and the country from which my family came from, and your cousins shouldn't be either.

  25. i feel were ever you are born you should be proud, i was born in America but i know a lot of Irish people here and they have let me seen pictures of Ireland and that is a very beautiful place very green i would like to go there some day to visit ..

  26. It is about your bloodline and family heritage, people (some) still value where their family history started out.  They are proud to be both american and whatever their family line is so for your cousins it would be Irish American and they are proud to be that way.

    I know I absolutely hate that!! Though if at least one of your cousins' parents are Irish it really isn't that bad!! What's worse is people who are Irish because their great great great grandmother's sister's housekeeper's son's ex-girlfriend's dog's first owner's brother's children's nanny married an Irish man!!

  28. i think its because america is the melting pot of all cultures. you are all proud of your heratige and what it adds to the pot. but altogether we are one country and makes one great pot of food. a little bit of everything.

  31. Americans....have many ethnic origins.

    Those ethnic roots are a source of great pride for most Americans...and those roots help define who we are.

    I also have an Irish heritage...and I also am very proud of where my family came from....

    Danny Thomas once said..." Those who deny their heritage...have no heritage."

    Americans aren't just Americans...they are

    African Americans

    French Americans

    Spanish Americans

    Croatian Americans

    etc......and

    IRISH AMERICANS!!!!!
