  1. Tylan is an antibiotic found in Angel Eyes, lots of maltese owners swear for this stuff (I haven't tried it myself though).

Keep the area clean and dry, some people try acidification of the secretions, you could achieve this giving your dog vinegar (mine won't drink it) or vitamin C (I have try the natural one with no color added and it works :)

BTW, it could be an anatomical problem (tear duct), genetics are also important.

You love your dog that's what really matters. MIne has no tear stains but an ever red muzzle :) and I love him

  2. Yes! A lot of small dogs have this problem, which bothers most pet owners because they'd like to see beautiful white fur around their eyes, not reddish pink color. We also have a Maltese and face this problem, BUT their IS a solution!

For one, I'd just like to say all the wipes and cheaper eye clearing things most likely won't work. Trust me, we've tried many different things!

Something that DOES work though is a bottle called "Angel Eyes". Yes, unfortunately it IS rather expensive, but it is the only thing that REALLY works! I get it at our local pet store... but many stores don't carry it (probably because they know most pet owners don't like to spend so much money on it, because how do they know it will work or not)! It's about $25 (for the little bottle at our pet store) or $75 for the big bottle (in the long run the big bottle is a better deal though, just a lot more money).

It comes with the bottle, a little measuring scooper, and instructions along with frequently asked questions. All you do is sprinkle the amount of it (that is said on the back of bottle I beleive, or the packet) all over your dog's food and it goes through their system and I'm guessing puts some mineral or something in it so when they get "teary eyed" its clear, beautiful, and unnoticeable!

    Good Luck!

P.S. On the front of the bottle it even says what breeds it specializes in, and Maltese is one of them!

P.S.S. It comes in a blue and a pink bottle, but they are both the same thing, probably just a decoration for boy or girl dog ;D

  3. use the product Angels Eyes its the only thing that really works. I use that on my maltese and it keeps the stains away. Its a miracle, I swear by it.

    check out their website: http://www.angelseyesonline.com/

    Good Luck

  4. IT IS THE WATER  !!!! I am willing to bet it all that you give your dog water from a faucet. The minerals in the water cause the tears to turn the fur that reddish color. I have a maltese as well. You will need to give the dog bottled water. This may sound funny but a gallon is only 68 cents so its not that expensive or unreasonable. Try this for a week or two and decide if its for you.

  5. I'd see your vet and see if they think flushing the tear ducts can help- sometimes they can get clogged and instead of tears going down the duct and back around the system to keep the eyes moist- the plugged duct forces the tears down the face

  6. My old yorkie had that problem as well. We would get packages of hypoallergenic baby wipes, and use them each morning. Since we found no way of preventing it, this just helped so he didn't have those ugly stains, and they're perfectly safe.
