1. their fingers could have smelt like food. my hamsters have never bit me, they just give a warning nibble. but when i just handled food, they l**k my fingers.

  2. Because you don't know how to handle a hamster.

  3. It is possible that the hamster was not tamed properly when they bought him home. Also some hamsters do not like it when you put your hand in "their"cage. They might be friendly outside the cage but inside the cage, if you put your hands, you are definite to get a bite.

Try the following steps to tame the hamster. Encourage your cousin to be with you when you are taming the hamster so that she also gets over her scare of bites.

STEP 1 - Start talking to him softly and hang around his cage enough for him to get used to your voice and smell. After this time feed your hamster some treats from your hand so he get used to seeing your hand. This might take a few days to happen but be patient. If you feel that the hamster still bites you, you can use gloves initially.

PRECAUTION - always interact with the hamster only when he is active. If you touch him or disturb him when he is sleeping, he can get angry and bite viciously.

STEP 2 - Once your hamster seems confident with taking treats out of your hand you can try to start handling your hamster. Before you handle your hamster make sure you have washed your hands well. Hamsters have a strong sense of smell. If they smell something on your hand they may mistake it for food and decide to bite!

Get a cup or something similar and place it into the hamster's cage. He should come to investigate and crawl inside. Take the hamster and cup out of the cage and let him walk out onto your hand. While you do this make sure you're sat down or sat close to the floor incase your hamster decides to jump. Let him walk from hand to hand. Be careful you don't grab or wrap your hands around your hamster until he is fully tame as this may scare him and he will jump out of your hand.

STEP 3 - Once your hamster is more confident with you, you can start to pick up your hamster straight from it's cage. Just make sure your hamster is aware that you are there, if not you may suddenly scare the hamster and it may turn around and bite you.

Best way to hold hamsters is to make them climb into one hand and cupping the other hand softly over the body so that his head pokes out from the gap between your two hands. Remember, do not apply any pressure on his body, he will get scared and snap at you.

And yes, it is definitely possible to tame a 3 month old hamster. Just some time and patience is needed and you will soon have a lovely and well behaved hamster.

  4. Hamsters bite period. they bite for no reason. she should have gotten a rat they never bit i have had 7 rats in the past 5 yrs and none of them has ever bit me. i went over my friends house and i was patting the hamster with ONE finger and he just bit me for no reason thats why im not to fond of hamsters.

  5. i think the hamster is overwelmed with all these hands grabbing it and picking it up. or maybe their handling the hamster different then u are. like in a way that upsets it. i dont think there is a way to tame hamsters...

  6. my hamster is over a year old and I finally came to taming it with this website:

it is pretty cool and my hamster opened up to me. i was surprised with the results. as for the biting, ur cousin and her mom probably smelt like food to it. I had that problem once. so they should wash their hands very thouroughly before and after handling him.
