I'm only 14 and don't really understand anything that wikipedia says about sciatica. My dad has it and has just been taken to hospital. = /

Can you die from it?

What can cause it?

Is there anything you can do daily to ease the pain?

And how can it be treated?

  1. It not as serious as you think i dont think you can die from it, thre are ways to treat it heres a clip from the internet

Sciatica is a set of symptoms including pain that may be caused by general compression and/or irritation of one of five nerve roots that give rise to the sciatic nerve, or by compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve itself. The pain is felt in the lower back, buttock, and/or various parts of the leg and foot. In addition to pain, which is sometimes severe, there may be numbness, muscular weakness, and difficulty in moving or controlling the leg. Typically, the symptoms are only felt on one side of the body.

Although sciatica is a relatively common form of low back pain and leg pain, the true meaning of the term is often misunderstood. Sciatica is a set of symptoms rather than a diagnosis for what is irritating the root of the nerve, causing the pain. This point is important, because treatment for sciatica or sciatic symptoms will often be different, depending upon the underlying cause of the symptoms.

  2. Do not worry nobody dies from sciatica.  Although the pain is so severe people think they're going to die.  It's usually caused from a pinched nerve going down the buttocks and leg.  One of the best treatments is to get massage therapy because the muscles tighten up around the nerve and cause more pain.  Place a moist heating pad on the area of pain and afterwards massage an analgesic cream into the area.  Physical treatment as I've described will do more to ease the pain then pills.

Have your father see a chiropractor for further analysis and treatment.

  3. It is a pinched nerve that runs down one leg, from the lower back.It is very painful.Time,Rest and pain medication eases it. It is not fatal, and lifting heavy objects aggravate it.

  4. the sciatic nerve runs from the lower back down the butt and leg. lots of things can cause it. western medicine thinks it has to do with lifting heavy things; eastern medicine thinks it's money problems.

i work at a school that teaches massage therapy and therapeutic massage; we have lots of clients with the same problem (let me rephrase - we have a lot of clients who used to have the same problem, but they have gotten better. all of them have). we have a teacher who had to go to China to help out with the olympics doing massage (sports massage); we now have Phelps' trainer as a client. we will soon have him, too! i'm so excited - can you tell?

anyway, there are things - lots of things - that can be done short of medicine (that never gets out of your body. it builds up on muscles as lactic acid and becomes painful as the body ages) or surgery (which can have lots of complications).
