My dog has three legs?

he lost his left front leg in a car accident. Is his right front shoulder joint at risk from overuse?

It should be fine - dogs adapt very well to only having 3 legs. If you are concerned, start supplementing his food with glucosamine. It's very good for the joints (for dogs as well as us!) and should help keep everything strong and healthy.

I don't think you have to worry! The 3-legged dogs I've seen & known seem do be stronger, learn better balance, and adapt to the loss extremely well. Their legs and joints actuall become more flexible and stronger as they adapt.

I had one once, only 3 legs from birth... I named him Tri-pod.

He may be more prone to arthritis as he ages.

Otherwise, the muscles and bones will adapt.  We had a tripawed lab mix, he did just fine and lived to 13.

Having seen many many dogs in my rescues with only 3 legs, the only thing I can suggest is that you keep your dog on the lean side, and do not let him gain too much weight.  The more you keep him moving, and with proper diet, he will be fine.

Animals adapt much better at amputation than we humans do.  You did not say if he is a large breed dog.  If he is, please be sure to give him a joint care vitamin.  You will be amazed at how well he reacts to only 3 legs.
