  1. Maybe you had a dirty big rat in your capboard and it knocked the glass over.Yuk.Quick phone the rat exterimator.

  2. Glass isn't really a solid, its a 'supercooled liquid', so changes in temperature cause it to flex slightly.  This can be seen if you look at old windows, they actually slump or flow downward over long periods of time.  Best guess is that one glass had a small flaw that caused it to shatter.

  3. yeh, i think this isnt paranormal or anything like that!

  4. Well I heard if a glass gets too warm or cold too quickly they can shatter, but if it was the only one out of many that's strange. And if it was just in the cupboard  then the temperare wouldn't have changed so quickly, unless a ghost was around. Just watch out for more unusual things.

  5. CHANGES IN TEMPERATURE that happen very quickly can cause glass or hard objects to shatter

  6. You have already received many great reasonable answers. I have had glasses to break for no reason. I do not know what it is about coca cola glasses shaped like the old soda fountain glasses but I cannot keep them. They seem to be even more fragile than regular glasses.

  7. It happens sometimes, more often with cheap glass and unusual forms of glass -- like your cocacola glass.  It could have been put through the dishwasher cycle one too many times, and the hot water weakened the glass.

Or maybe you have a kitchen brownie playing mischevious tricks on you!  Bang some pots and pans together and shout "get out!" in the middle of the night, flipping the lightswitch on and off to make the little critters flee.  ;)

  8. All the answers so far seem reasonable.

Now when they all fly out of your cupboard make a circle around your head and then all explode at one time please post again so we can hear about gravity and stress cracks causing that as well.

  9. Isn't nature funny!

My kid lost his tooth, he put it near me. After a day or two I watched as it exploded in front of me.

I had some vinyl records from the turn of the century, same thing, started popping and then big pieces popped off.

Even had a big glass lazy suzen in the micro wave break in two.

The right atmosphere that your  glass just could not handle....

Rack it up as one of natures jokes.

  10. Had it been in the dishwasher and overheated? Then...when it cooled off..it cooled too quickly ..and the fast change in temperature caused it? (Just guessing!)

  11. what the last guy said

  12. well maybe cause the weight of all the glasses on the cupboard.

  13. Glasses are made by a heating process but when we over heat it and expand it further than it can, of course it will get destroyed.

A slight crack on any glass can cause it to explode. Or even a little heat can cause it to explode because the molecules try to expand. The drier the glass is, the more brittle it gets.

In your case, the glass was upside down. Meaning that the glass was carrying its weight with its weaker part (just like you trying to stand on your arms.) and gravity pulling it down more.

Imagine a glass candle holder. When the candle is lit for hours the glass will eventually explode. Even more if there is a crack. (try it if you wont believe it.)

So I assume that since it was upside down, the glass was having a hard time to carry itself. And since it was in the cupboard it was dry and the heat was getting higher. Hence making the glass explode.
