Question:

My hamster is dying?

She just had wet tail and I thought she was over it because she was eating on her own but now she is curled up in a little ball trying her hardest to stay alive.

I've been trying to force feed her but she won't move her tounge. Is there any way I can get water into her?

I called the vet and they said that I could something to hold down her tounge but if I didn't get it to go into her stomach it would go into her lungs. How do I know if it's going to the right place?

If there is absolutely nothing I can do how can I make sure she's not in pain?

  1. Did you get her treatment for wet tail, other than the stuff from the pet store? That DriTail will only treat the symptoms, not the sickness.

She needs to see a vet in person, unless you are willing to let her die.

If you aren't going since you can't afford it, then you should not have brought her home at all.

  2. I am really sorry to hear about your little hamster. Watching a hamster suffering from wet tail can be very sad but your hammie is trying to fight it out as hard as possible. I sincerely wish that she wins the battle.

The main problem with wet tail is it causes dehydration in your pet and you have to force feed it water. Here is a suggestion on how to do it -

Place some water in a dropper or a syringe and slowly push it into her mouth drop by drop. Even if some goes on her fur she will lap it up. Make sure that you give it only drop by drop and not alltogether otherwise it might go to its lungs.

Another thing you can do is to go and quickly buy vitamin drops for pets from the nearest pet store. Add the vitamin drops to the water you are forcefeeding her. You will need to keep force feeding her water until she starts feeling better.

Don't worry too much about her not eating food because as she gets better she will start to eat but a hamster can die within a few days of being dehydrated.

Do keep us posted. All the best!!!

  3. you could try what the vet said first. if it proves too tricky either call him back and see if there's nothing else, if not just make her comfortable and keep trying. she could have had other issues going on besides wet tail. rodents are amazing at hiding illness. i'm sorry about your baby =(

  4. Sorry about your hamster.

If you rub the hamster neck she should swallow. Then rub her stomach.

This works with 90% of small and large animals.

  5. Try to wake her up as much as possible and use a toothpick with the end cut off it to hold her tounge down and only put 1 drop of water in her left hand side of her mouth and pray to god she keeps fighting keep us updated

  6. Buy an eyedropper from a pharmacy.  Put water in it that is, squeeze the eyedropper into the water until it is filled and gently put it down her throat.  Please do this ASAP.
