I have a 2003 Chevy Impala, my horn doesn't work and I have to get it inspected before the month(Aug) is over. So I went to a chevy dealership and asked them about the horn and this guy told me that It will cost me around 800 dollars just to buy the horn part plus labor which will run me around 1000 or more. Does it really cost that much to fix a horn?? And does anyone know anywhere else I could go to get it done for cheap?? Any help would be greatly appreciated

  1. First check the fuse.

Even if the (the actual) horn is broken, you can get your local mechanic to fix it for less than 1 hour labor.

My old horn used to go often (I never figured out why) so I replaced them alot.  Was really easy.

Only go to the dealer for really difficult to fix jobs.  All routine stuff can be done by any mechanic.

    Good luck...

  2. Definitely check your fuses. There is a fuse box in the car and and should be one under the hood. I have a silverado that for some reason blows the fuse every so often. On your fuse covers there should be a diagram that shows you where the horn fuse is located, which I believe should be a 20 amp. If your car has a horn relay, you may have a bad relay also. If need swap a relay for your Daytime running lamps to see if this makes the horn work, but make sure you swap them back. And if none of that helps you , go to a local parts store, and usually the sales clerks may be able to help you. Don't go back to that dealership though because that is a ridiculous amount of money to fix a horn. They are trying to rip you off, or they just don't want to do the work so they give you an amount like that. There are probably local shops who will be honest and do it for less than half of the dealership. Good Luck>

  3. 1000 bucks for horn eh? smells like BS...

anyway...have you checked your fuses? if good check wires and connectors leading to your horn.

if fuses are bad replace and check if horn works. if it blows then disconnect horn and try again. does it blow? if it doesn't then your horn is hooped. if it still does, expect a short in the system.

there are more diagnostic aids, but you need to pinpoint to see if the activation switch works (steering wheel buttons), or see if the horn works (connectors), check relays, fuses, wiring.

  4. Chevy should have a single wire at the horn. Check to see if you have twelve volts at the horn while the horn button is depressed. If you have twelve volts than you have a bad horn. and if there is no voltage then check your fuse if the fuse is good then Check the wire from the relay to horn check your horn relay if the relay is good then remove the steering wheel check the contact wire make sure its not broken if that is good then check the wire from the slip ring to the relay if all that is good then the horn works.
