My laptops windows vista stopped working?????

Question

Every time i turn on my computer the entire background is pitch black except a little window that opens up. From that window i can navigate through my files and run ma computer almost normally but i know something is wrong and want to fix it. Anyone know whats wrong?? Any idea how to fix it??

from the little screen if you can do a system restore i would do that
