My little sister needs YOUR help!?!?!?

Well here's the story:

My little sister has been sitting in front of the computer looking some Korean Entertainment stuff for 5-7 hours a day weekdays and 6-8 hours on weekends. She's been doing this ever since we got DSL in the beginning of January of this year up until now. I warned her that doing this will ruin her eyesight and my parents had talked to her about it and she would just ignore us.

Well...back to the original question....How long would it take until the computer ruins your eyesight?

I would like a straight answer and please this is serious...

Well it can cause dry-eye syndrome and eyestrain which can cause headaches and eye pain. You need to tell her and even take it away from her to get her strength in her eye back, i bet it's already lacking moisture, i can now not see from distance without glasses because of many uses on computer.

Arg. Parents believing tales isn't uncommon, but children, you should know better!

She could stick her nose into the screen and it would never, period, never, harm her sight. If she DOES develop a refractive error (need glasses) it's not because she 'ruined her sight'- it's because she was going to develop one anyways.

I repeat. Using a computer cannot effect your need for glasses, it cannot damage your eyes, it cannot do ANYTHING but lead to temporary discomfort.

She won't ruin her eyesight, she will just become obese.  If you'd like diseases that are related to obesity that won't be much of a problem...

Well, the computer itself can't "ruin your sight". The radiation it produces is very minimal, although she could suffer eye strain. Instead of fighting her, you should try and teach her good computer habits, like letting her eyes rest for 20 seconds every hour or so, and blinking a lot to keep her from having dry eye syndrom.
