There are a few things that you can do:

1. There is a widget called Maintidget. This runs UNIX scripts to speed it up. Run all three.

2. If you have Tech Tool, restart from the CD or e-Drive and run an optimization.

3. Check to make sure that only the programs you need are open. Quit out of programs with Cmd+Q if you aren't using them.

4. When finished using a browser like Firefox or Safari, quit fully (cmd+q) As browsers stay open, they will use up more, and more memory over time.

5. Restart occasionally

The UNIX scripts are set to run at about 1 AM. If your computer is off they will not run, however if it is sleeping they run when you turn it on.
