My mom HATES rock music!!!?

Question

Now that i'm getting older(im 16) im finding different things that i like. One of them is rock music because the group of friends i'm in and my boyfriend all love it so im around it a lot and now im starting to like it. I have to like hide it from my mom because she thinks that rock music is all pot smokers and druggies.....but u know what? So is rap and hiphop!! Its annoying my mom tries to act young and so she likes the new hiphop songs even though they're pathetic with there lyrics. I dont' think rock music is as bad as hiphop and rap lyricwise talking about stripping women and pimping hoes. So im in a tough situation, and i hate how i have to hide the things i like from her. What do you think? Is rock music really as bad as she thinks it is??

If she thinks it's so bad...make her listen to "Creeping Death" from Metallica. It's about the Exodus of the Jews from Egypt.

Um no. I mean I could criticize every type of music. It's just your moms opinion.

I'd rather my kid listen to rock than rap or hip-hop. Your mom must be pretty young if she isn't into rock and likes that other c**p instead.

There are generalizations and blanket statements for almost every genre of music including some of the ones stated in your question and some of the responses. There are different strokes for different folks so instead of everyone getting nasty, maybe we should all just accept that people like different things.

Maybe your mother just doesn't like the sound or the particular artists that you listen to. I personally cannot stand most heavy metal, the screaming is pretty annoying to me, just as I don't like the twang in country. With that said, I do like rock and folk is sometimes close to country and I find it bearable. Likewise, I don't like the nonsensical ramblings of "artists" like 50 Cent or basically any hip hop on the radio or in the clubs etc., but love the intellectual and conscious messages behind the lyrics of some of the underrated hip hop greats like Mos Def, Talib Kweli, and Common....

Like I said it might be the music as a whole, or just the stuff that you are listening to that she doesn't like. If she doesn't like it then don't play it around her and when she's not home or in the car then crank up that stereo!

Well I hate RAP.. I  would tell her that you would be much better off listening to ROCK than RAP!

Here is why.. First off Pot Smoking is the Mecca of Rap music.. they all RAP about it..,(SOME) Rockers .. just do it, but don't preach how cool it is ,, unlike rappers..!!

Rap teaches white suburban kids the ghetto thug lifestyle .. they feel that it's the right way to act.. Rockers tend to not go out and rob people .. or be former gang members..

I could go on and on.. Possibly even write a book on this topic .. but just use your head .. and your mom can just live her ghetto fab life.. you can keep your life in Reality .. which is what most rock songs are about TRUTH ... NOT .. *** shaking .. cheating .. pimping ... having tight game.. smoking blunts..gangs.. shootings.. crack rocks.. money.. hoes.. liquor.. drama.. on the down low.. tricks.. Babbie's mamma's ..   ETC... Ya tell your mom to grow up...!!! Sounds like your music choice is MUCH MORE MATURE !!!  I would question your Mom's LIFE ,, and HER MORALS .. I laugh my azz off when I see WHITE people BUMMPIN to RAP.. Ha Ha... How ridiculous!!! Tell your mom GOOD LUCK with HERSELF!

NO.  It is much better than Hip Hop and Rap -- for all the reasons you said.

Ask her what music she listened to when she was your age.  I'll bet it was some of the same music you like now, since the best rock bands from 30 years ago are still the biggest groups touring today.
