  1. just scatter around , i would put the fountain in the center and the plants in the background

  2. The first thing I would do is jot down the times of day the sun is on the area where you want to plant your flowers (keep track for about a week). This way you will know where you get full sun, part sun, part shade, some shade or full shade. Trees can be a burden when it comes to blocking the sun from being where you want it.

If you need more sun in a given area, it can be as simple as trimming a few lower branches from the trees. But make sure you have the proper light for the types of plants you want to place in that location.

Rather than argue, your parents can plant in containers to begin with and move the containers around until they agree on a particular spot for a particular plant.

A fountain is always a beautiful, soothing, elegant addition to any garden. You can place a bench near the fountain to sit and relax to the sound of a trickle of water while reading a favorite book. The fountain can be large enough to be seen and heard from a distance or small enough only to be seen or heard when close to the bench or flowers. It’s location in respect to the plants will be personal and depend on the “feeling” they’d like to convey – or what they want the area to look like. It could be centered or to the right or left of the border – their choice.

There are many options and a compromise can easily be made to make both your mom and dad very happy. Just suggest they take their time and be thoughtful about what will be planted where - and what will and will not be included. In the end, I’ve no doubt they will be glad they did.
