I have 2 Giant rabbits who have free run of the garden during the day and then go into the hutch at night, i have just gone out to check on them and 1 of my bunnies is missing.......he has escaped before( and was returned by a neighbour) through a broken fence which has been mended and i cannot see ANY way he could of got out.

Me and a neighbour have just had a look up and down our road with a torch with no luck, it is 11pm here and i don't want to be walking around on my own.

Q do rabbits have the burrow instict that wild rabbits have, will he be able to find his way home?

Of course i will go looking for him tomorrow in daylight, put up posters, inform vets etc.

  1. He may come looking for food when he gets hungry.  I would leave out some live traps in the AM (get them from a farm/feed store, usually, or Animal Control may borrow you one or two).  Bait them with fruit, veggies, herbs, etc.  Then look in small, dark places.  Rabbits will seek them out and hide.  I had one that ended up climbing into the back of a soda machine when I was in college!  Good luck, I hope you find him!

  2. Its heartbreaking when something like this happens to one of your pets but im glad to hear you have him back safely at home.

Well the answer to will he find his way back home is yes! I cant believe Rabbits are so clever, that realy is an amazing thing to happen your so lucky!

As the mystery of how he got out. Check all the fences and see if he dug his way out. I dont think he would have the digging instinct as he has never had to dig his way out of anything before and without being brought up known how to dig he shouldnt develop that skill so far on.

Again im glad you have him back and in future you may need to supervise them in the garden or secure the garden even more to prevent this happening again as now he knows how to do it he could do it more often.

  3. I know this sounds silly, but they can help you find your bunny.

Find the closest animal shelter/rescue, and file a report on their website.

Mine helped find my little kitten a few months ago.

Or you can get a flashlight..go look outside..

You can set a live trap..

There isnt much else you can do.

I'm sorry, but I hope the best comes to you dear.

  4. its dead i think. the fox must of ate him.

  5. Well done, really glad you found him, if i was you i would of s..t myself when i couldnt find him!!!

    im happy for you!

  6. You should look tonight, domestic rabbits don' have the same instincts as wild rabbits and have an average life span of 1-3 days outdoors.  find him fast!!!

  7. sorry to hear about that.

My best advice is talk outdoors, they will feel lost and if they hear a familiar voice, they will find it comforting and hopefully he will come towards the vioce and home. Although he may come later in the night.  Also make the garden accesable, leave gates open etc or areas he may have escaped from open so if he returns he can get back in.

Good luck and i hope you find him.
