My sewing machine is grinding?

ok i don't know alot about sewing machines, but when i hit the petal for it to run it goes suuuper slow and makes a grinding noise, like its really forcing, trying hard to run but cant, its a singer model 8280

The machine needs cleaned and oiled badly. you can get a do it yourself book if you are handy or take it into a repair shop.
