3 days ago i bought 3 Black skirt tetras, 3 White Skirts Tetras and 3 Serpae Tetras from PETSMART ... i started to notice that the Serpae tetras werent eating. i thought maybe they had to get used to their new home... but after 2 days and they still didnt eat i started to look them over. and it looks like they have a mouth fungus. all 3 of them.

I did some research and it looks a lot like cotton mouth. What i want to know is can i treat the whole tank for this? I'm afraid my other fish may have already caught it. it has been 2-3 days and i heard you can add salt to the water to help fight infections. can i use ordinary table salt? (i know about aquarium salt at the pet stores but i want to start treating as soon as possible and I cant go until im off of work.)

I don't have another tank to treat the 3 fish who look like they have cotton mouth. I'd have to put them in a small trash can or something (which i'd rather not do)

  1. I think it has to be aquarium salt, but I'm not sure.  from what I've heard, cottonmouth is hard to treat, but salt works the best.  if you're going to add salt, don't dump it in all at once, but add more over a period of a few days.  Also, petsmart and other stores sell antibacterial medicines which may help.  (maracyn plus antibacterial, etc).  they also sell medicated fish foods.  Good luck, hope this helps.

  2. Pimafix, a product you can buy at Petsmart or even Walmart, works miracles in treating your fish.  Along with Pimafix, buy aquarium salt, availible at PetSmart or Walmart.  DO NOT USE TABLE SALT.  Graduly use the aquarium salt over a few days, a little with each dose of Pimafix.  Soon your fish will be as good as new!  Good luck!
