  1. NASA is paying for my research this year, but I'm not working at a NASA center - we applied for funding, and we got it, so I work at my university.  I have a few friends who worked for NASA as astrophysicists, doing research.  They spent about half their time on their own projects and half on the NASA projects.  To tell you the truth, none of my friends really liked it there.  NASA requires that you show up at a certain time and work for a certain number of hours a day, unlike universities and national labs, where you can set your own hours as long as you get the work done.  One of my friends was sharing a cubicle - and he had a PhD!  He would have had an office to himself anywhere else.  Not to mention all the security clearances they needed, and how many NASA centers seem to be turning into military bases with all the security.  They were pretty happy to go back to university jobs.

I'm sure they only represent a small portion of the people who work for NASA, but it's been enough for me to probably not seek a job there in the future.

  2. There are a lot of jobs. Designers make rockets and salties. Astrounuts fly out into space and help mankind. There are also managers who pretty much boss around communicators who communicate with the astrounuts and help the satlities.
