Why didn't the North Americans call the United States, the United States?

What did they call it?

  1. what time period?  Do you mean before European settlement of North America?

    the people who lived here before the Europeans were not a united people.  They were an assortment of various tribes who were mostly at a stone age level technologically.  There was no centralized government, there was no common name for the entire continent let alone the area we presently call the United States.

    since this is a literature question:  are you talking about a particular piece of work?  What is your frame of reference?  You could have a better or more thorough answer if you add where the question is coming from or what source caused you to ask this question.


  2. Since the Constitution of the United States of America  was actually pre-written by the Iroquois Nation as specifically the Mohawk tribe long before the US term was introduced, why would this apellation even be a consideration among the First Americans?
