Question:

Need help with grip & club choice?

I currently use callaway X 20 clubs, graphite shafts. I've been playing on and off for 2 years, but am really getting into it now as I 'm in a club for 4~ months now (23 handicap). My problem is I'm hooking the ball too much. I use a strong grip, and was told the clubs are made for a draw. So, should I get new steel shaft irons I would love more control, as I think my distance is fine, if I should go with steel irons, what are good, easy to hit and nice for a high handicapper? Thanks, in advance.

  1. Try just weakening  your grip a little (turn both hands to the left).  Strong grips promote the draw or hooked shot.  The clubs are not made for a draw so that person didn't know what they were talking about.  Reshafting an entire set of irons is an expensive proposition - you can learn to hit the ball straighter as you progress in the game with the equipment you have.

  2. I own the X-20's as well and am very happy with them.

If you're hooking the ball and you know you're using a strong grip, I'd try weakening your grip until you start getting your desired ball flight.

  3. the x20 are for high handicappers I'd stick with them. Maybe a lesson would help. No one can give you swing or grip advice with out seeing you set up and swing.

  4. Don't spend any money on clubs just yet. Money is better spent on a few lessons.  Hooking could be ball position, swing plane or your strong grip - not the clubs.  If you said you were a lower handicapper,  maybe then check your shafts as they might be too flexible for the speed of your swing - but again a teaching pro can help you with that.
