Need help with wiring something up?

Ok, I have plans to rig a speaker box to my PC so I can blast music louder than my dad =]. I know in order to do this I need a separate power output then the audio jack on a PC otherwise there wont be enough power to make the speaker loud enough. My idea is to run a wire from a wall jack and mesh it into the wiring of the speaker that is rigged to plug into my audio jack of my PC.

I know that there are 2 wires in the audio cable and because of that they should mesh together quite perfect. I believe both the PC speakers and the wall outlet are 1 way currents so if I mesh them together, I wont have to worry about the power going DOWN the PC speaker wire and shorting out my PC audio jack or worse.

  1. The wall jack has too much power. You'll probably just blow a fuse or fry your computer, if not start a fire.

  2. This is a recipe for disaster. You need either a separate amplifier, or speakers that have a built in amplifier (as most computer speakers do -- but it isn't very powerful). Use an adapter cable to connect the speaker output on the computer to the RCA Aux In jacks on the amplifier, and connect standard hi-fi speakers to the amplifier.

  3. If you enjoy fire go ahead with your plan. If you want to blast dad safely you need a booster known as an amplifier. The wiring and power issue you outlined is not safe and it will not work. Go to a Best Buy or Circut City for advise from the audio guys for the best gear in your price range.

  4. If you do what you describe, you'll fry your speakers, the sound circuit in your computer, and most likely the computer itself. You could also hurt yourself trying this and might even burn your house down. There no such thing as a one way wire and the electricity in you wall socket is AC anyway. This means it travels in both directions alternately.

Get a higher powered set of computer speakers or a higher powered amplifier and some non-powered speakers to hook to it. Turn up your volume and blast your dad out of the house.

  5. If you follow through with your plans as described, the very best you can hope for is to blow a fuse or trip a circuit breaker. The likely outcome is that you will fry your PC and your speakers.

Go to the store and buy a powered speaker, please!
