I am getting a new chinchilla in a couple days. About 10 weeks old. It has been a few years since I have had a chinchilla! So, there are upgrades and forgetful memories...

What is the best substrate out there?

I know I need a bath house and dust.

Good quality pellet (doing some research).

Hay

I like to get a wood perch to play.

Are those hammocks or house (cloth ones) that hang good for chins?

I know I need a hiding house, i think last time I got a wood one as the mine before ate the plastic ones and I didnt want to make them sick.

What about treats, etc to help bond? What can I do to help her bond to me?

Thanks a bunch!

Any help, info, web pages, etc would be great.

  1. Here is where I get all my infor. go to exotic pets under chinchillas

  2. The best substrate to use is Yesterday's News, which is made of recycled paper that has been pressed into pellets. It can be bought in bulk and doesn't end up everywhere like Care Fresh.

I'd suggest getting Mazuri chinchilla pellets, it's the best out there.

I would suggest not buying a hammock or cloth house, as they will be soiled on and possibly chew, which can block up their digestive track.

Good treats would include small carrot and apple pieces, as well as rose hips. Rasins contain much too sugar, and should only be given in the most limited quantities. Treats are the best way to bond with your chinchilla.
