Question:

New Hammie Owner With Some Questions!?

I just got 12 new dwarf hamsters last night and I dont know what kind or what you would call their colors:

Mom (little lighter then dad) & Dad are orangey with red eyes & white bellies light stripes going down backs (dad's stripe darker then mom's)

5 babies are grey with black eyes and black stripe going down their back

5 babies are orangey with red eyes and light stripe going down their back

Does the darker the stripe mean a boy & the lighter the stripe a girl?

How old do the babies have to be to leave mom and be put in same s*x groups?

I got them from people just giving them away mom has been in with dad since she had her babies (so I dont know if she may be prego again or not) about 3-4 weeks ago some of the babies are alot smaller then the others does that mean anything?

Why does it mean when they squeak at you like they want to eat you?

Please any info is welcome & any websites too.

Thanks all for reading my question and giving me answers.

  1. They are russian dwarf hamsters. It does not matter how light the stripes are on their backs. It may be dark or it may be light. The female hamster aka girl hamster may be preganat again because 24 hours after she give birth the female and male aka boy can mate again. The babies have to 3-4 weeks old to be seperated from the mom and weaned aka sexed. Some are smaller because they are from a different litter or they are runts. But they probably are from a different litter because there is about only one runt per litter. They may squeak at you because they are not famillar with you yet, they are hungry, or they are hurt. I hope this helped you!!! =]

  2. i breed my hamsters and i usually seperate the baby hamsters from the mom when they turn a month because at 2 months they can start breeding. the dark or light starp does not define the s*x because i have dwarf hamsters and the dad is light tanned and themom is a dark tan and i have kept one baby from them and she is a female with a light strip but so is the dad. you should be able to tell their s*x when they are atleast a month old or one and a half. if some babies are smaller then u should get them checked because i had a litter like that once and it was because they were not getting enough food and they died except the ones that were eating. when they squeak is mainly because they are hungry, cold, or they are looking for their mom. hope this helps.

  3. i think there russian dwarf (not possitive)

that site will show pictures it should help

i dont think it means anything

idk Why  it mean when they squeak at you like they want to eat you

oh is you put pics it will help us detemine the breed

  4. More info please, so I can better answer your question.

Are your grey babies totally grey or do they have white bellies like mom and dad?

If they are a solid color are they a soft blue-grey or more of a washed out black?

Are you SURE you have a single litter of babies and not two? How great is that size difference? (Campbells can have a second litter 18 days after the first - so you could have two litters if there is a large size difference).

Do you know the actual date of delivery? The difference between 3 weeks and 4 weeks is a lot in hamster days.

EDIT - ok with the additional information I'm more confused - or I'm missing something obvious and will be kicking myself later for it.

I want to say you have Campbells dwarfs based on the colouring, but if the parents are both "orangey with red eyes and white bellies" it means they are one of the colours red eyed lilac, blue fawn, beige, or dark beige (not necessarily the same colour as each other) - no combination of those would give you a grey baby with black eyes and a white tummy (sounds like opal or agouti, but most folks would call an agouti brown rather than grey)

Dumb questions - are you sure that both mom and dad have red eyes? or did you maybe look at the same one twice on accident? how sure are you that these are the parents?

Anyone on here know Winter White genetics??? Would that make genetic sense for these? I know there is a sapphire colour that could easily be described as grey, but they only orangeish colour I can think of would be the one that turned out to be the hybrid (can't think of name - pudding? maybe) and I don't know the eye colour offhand.

As an FYI - "russian dwarf" is a misnomer and won't actually tell you what you have as different dwarf species are called by that name despite being different creatures. Folks incorrectly using the names and not really knowing what they own is the cause of some of the unfortunate hybrid incidents that have occured. The four types of dwarf hamsters available as pets are "Campbells", "Winter Whites" - both of these are what folks sometimes call russian - "Robovorski" and "Chinese".

  5. Okay. First of all, all dwarf hamsters have a stripe down their back. The darkness of the stripe does not determine their s*x. You're hamsters are also most likely Campbell's dwarfs. So you might want to figure that out with someone who can see the hamsters.

Second of all, babies have to be 21 days, (no less) old to leave your home and find a new one.

    Third.

    Squeaks are different.

Some means they're happy, some mean they're angry. It depends.

    Hope this helps.

  6. sorry i cant help you,  i dont know much about hamsters.  I will say that when they squeak at u like that they are likely to be hungry or scared and the smaller ones may be runts or they may be a different litter to the others.  go to this website, its great.
