Question:

New Television Looks Terrible!!!!!?

I just purchased a 50 inch, Samsung, plasma T.V.

I do not have a HDTV cable box, I have regular Dish Network.

We got our t.v. home and hooked it up yesterday and it looks like absolute garbage!!!!

It is pixellated (sp?) really baddly, it has trails and afterimages, it is blurry, speckly and the color sucks!!! The picture also looks bouncy at times but not everything in veiw just a specific spot or subject.

We bought this t.v. because after all of the research that we did, we found that this seemed to be the nicest t.v. as well as everyone else's opinion that this was the t.v. to buy.

Why does it look like such c**p and how can I fix this problem. This was and $1,800.00 t.v. and I don't think that it should look SO terrible!!!!

Thanks for any help you can give and please, only serious responses!!!

  1. Get HDTV. Basically the resolution on the TV is to good for the signal you are supplying to it. Because the resolution on this TV is so good it is showing all the imperfections in a normal analog signal which a SDTV would not show. I have a 1080P TV with HDTV, i.e. I get NBC, ABC, etc. in HD and the same channel in analog. I can watch a show on ABC HD channel then switch to the standard ABC channel and can't believe the difference. I thought the same thing when I first got my TV then I got HD and saw the difference. there is nothing wrong with your TV its your signal.

  2. Is this an HDTV or Stander Definition.  When you try to view SD on a HDTV it looks really bad.  The reason is because new video source (SD) is lower qulity for the higher screen.

Your TV should have a built in HDTV tuner right?  Just grab an antenna and search for the stations in your area (your  HDTV stations)  see how that looks.

Some of the blurry and other settings you probably can turn off in the menus.  But really you need to your new HDTV to act as an OLD TV.  (if you can set the resolution to 480i) it might look okay.

  3. It shouldn't look bad at all but will look better with an HD source. The first thing I'd try is changing the wires, you may have a bad one or a faulty connection. Also check to see if you switched the sat box to channel 4 by mistake. The switch is on the back near the coax tv input. You also may need to run the TV setup menu and have it scan for channels (it may not be hooking up to channel 3 properly). To do that, read the owners manual. Lastly, you can reset the sat box.

    SATELLITE VIDEO RECOVERY

Follow these instructions if you accidentally change the channel or video

input on your TV and cannot get the picture back from your satellite TV

receiver. When you press the RECOVER button as described below, the

remote control sends commands to your TV to change channels or video

inputs to try to get you back to watching satellite programming. This

procedures works only if you have accidentally changed the channel or

video input and does not recover lost satellite signal (See Chapter 5 -

Reference for troubleshooting information). Satellite Video Recovery only

works if the remote control has been set up to control the TV and/or VCR.

Note: You may need to press the RECOVER button up to 30 times to

    recover your satellite TV video.

    1. Press and hold the RECOVER button until all four mode buttons light,

and then let go of the button. The SAT mode button flashes twice and

then all four mode buttons flash three times.

    2. Press the RECOVER button. The TV mode button flashes once and

then all four mode buttons flash once.

Note: Recover will first try to tune your TV to channel 3, then channel

4, and then other video inputs.

    3. If you see the Important System Information screen, press the

SELECT button to close the screen. You have recovered your satellite

    video.

    4. If you do not see the Important System Information screen, repeat steps 2 and 3 until you have recovered your satellite video.

Note: Press any remote control button other than the RECOVER button

    to end this procedure.

I'm assuming you have the Dish311 box but the others work in a similar way anyway.  Once you get it right, it should look very good.

  4. The picture on HDTVs is so accurate that it shows all of the flaws of a standard definition channel, and even accentuates the problems. You might try using the composite video connection (yellow RCA cable) for the video from the box to the TV. That should give you somewhat better pictures.

Otherwise, bite the bullet and get an HD satellite box, and use the component (red, blue, and green) video cables or HDMI cables to the TV.

  5. Yes - upgrade to a HD PVR from dish.

For fun (ok, my kind of fun): order from the internet a $24 indoor antenna called: "Phillips Silver Sensor - classic".  Hook this up to the TV with a long coax, put the antenna near a window and tell the TV to scan for channels.  You can usually pick up 3-10 free HD local channels.  It will show you what true HD looks like on that new TV.
