New Years Accommodation - San Francisco?

Question

Do hotels around Union Square / Fishermans Wharf get sold out around New Years? I am spending a few days in San Francisco around New Years and need to know if I have to make reservations well in advance, or can I wait until closer to try and get a better deal.

Is there anywhere else to stay in San Fran that is good for shopping and tourist stuff?

Make your reservations now; they do book up.  And they charge a lot.
