New Zealand School Question?

Hi.

I'm 14, I'll be 15 in October, here in the Philippines, I'm a 3rd year high school (known as grade 9 in other countries), but if i go to new zealand and study there, what grade will I be?

New Zealand doesn't use 'grades'. They refer to each year as a 'form' or 'year'. There is some flexibility as to what age goes where and there is often some overlap. Where you are placed may depend more on your ability than your exact age. However, a student who is 14 when the year starts (January) and turns 15 during the latter part of the year, would normally be put into year 10 (form 4). However, if you request it, and have the ability, you could be placed into year 11 (form 5). However, the school would also need to take into account the fact that college exams (NCEA) start in year 11 and so if you joined part way through year 11, you may have great difficulty in catching up with students who were already well into level one of the NCEA exams/assessments. My view would be that you would be placed into year 10. That means you would need to complete the remainder of year 10, as well as years 11, 12 and 13 in order to move on to University.

In what you call high school and we call College the normal age ranges are:

Year 9 - form 3 - ages 13/14

Year10 - form 4 - ages 14/15

Year11 - form 5 - ages 15/16

Year 12 - form 6 - ages 16/17

Year13 - form 7 - ages 17/18

There are exceptions but these are usually for very bright students who are pushed ahead; New Zealand doesn't operate a system of holding non performing students back, but at the point of entry, for students from other countries, they sometimes err on the side of caution and place a student in a lower rather than higher year.

I'm also new in new zealand. All I know is that the last year is year 13 so you can trace it backwards.

By your age you're most likely to be in Year 11.  The highschool you attend may give you a short test to match your knowledge to the 'Year'.

When my husband moved to NZ years ago from England, he was placed a year back.

You will probably go in as a second year of high school, 4th form and be assessed to see how your education compares to ours.

In New Zealand we have 13 years at school, starting from Year 1 at aged 5...so it depends on when you started school!!

In the UK people start high school in year 7, while its year 9 here in New Zealand.....Most people start high school here at age 12 or 13 and so I think you will be at the moment in Year 10 ( also known as 4th form in the older teminology).....unless you are advanced and maybe in year 11 that is.

As everyone else has mentioned you should probably be in Year 10 over here in New Zealand. However if you somehow manage to make it into Year 11 then you will unfortunately have to face the wretched horrors of NCEA which is our version of getting qualifications via exams over here in NZ. Heres hoping that you slip into Year 10 instead!
