I can remember my old boss jeering at me as being out of date for using a piece of office equipment which was nearly 100 years old. I suggested that he got something newer if he felt that way. Give him his due he did. Other members of the staff used it for a while and then  returned to my old equipment. ( it was actually a small paper drill ) So I well understand the phrase new and improved, but I do not always believe it
