I'm somewhat of an experienced setter but this year i graduated to official setter on my JV volleyball team so my question is where should i set to?

Near/next to the net or in the middle of the attack line and the net?

any other tips?

  1. Ideally, it's best to set as close to the net as possible.  The catch is the closer you set to the net, the more chance that the spike will be blocked.

You have to get to know your spikers.

If you have a very dominant spiker who has a very high reach/contact, then he/she will like it close to the net so that they can hit OVER the block most times.

Otherwise, if your spiker is average, then best to set about ~ a foot (30cm) off the net.

If you're setting for a backcourt hitter, best to set these about 2-3 feet infront of the attack line.  That way, your hitter can jump forward to increase attack momentum

  2. Work at practice with each of your primary hitters to find out how they like their sets, and work to set it how they want it.  Each hitter likes the ball a different length off the net depending on the type of hit they're doing.

  3. Set wherever you feel like. I play setter for my high school and we run the court. Set to your strongest hitter, But if she is messing up that day then dont keep setting to her. Set what is easiest for you and what your most comfortable with. Dont sweat it. Have fun. Setters are the most important players on the court :)

  4. Set everywhere! back row front row middle and both sides!
