im a new boxer, and i really love the sport. But i dont really know where to start. I just want to use boxing as something to help me bulk up/self defense, not really sparring. So what do you do for your workouts?

  1. Heavy bag, speed bag, glove work, shadow box, double end bag, foot work, calisthenics, run, jumping rope, etc, etc...there's a lot that goes into a boxing training session.  Usually you work out in rounds spending three minutes on and one minute off moving from one training aspect to the next, or spending a good number of rounds on what you need the most work out (or the heavy bag and shadow box, those are the two biggest keys).

A couple words of warning though:  First, boxing isn't a great workout for bulking up.  If anything it will slim you down.  Sure lots of boxers lift weights in addition to their boxing training, but thats what bulks them, not the boxing.  Secondly, the best way to advance your skills is to log ring time.  Boxing is not a skill that can be learned solely on the bag.  To ever really be good, you will need to do some appropriate sparring.  This is not to say you have to go fight Vladamir Klitschko, but some light work with a partner at your skill level is necessary to really understand the flow of a fight and learn how it plays out in real time.

Good luck and welcome to boxing, the best sport in the world!

  2. Workouts start off in the gym. as in strength training gym, then eventually cardio workouts and eventually strict diet and supplementing.

  3. i don't think you will bulk-up, you'll get cut-up.

but for the self-defense you need experience , just punching a bag that doesn't hit back ain't gonna help you to fight a real person, just keeping it real

  4. go to a gym and start easy and go to harder stuff

  5. boxing is more for getting lean. just go to a boxing gym near you.
