  1. i play golf & i shoot in the 90s (i am girl/14)  yes there are differences in clubs.  since you are new, i suggest you try HYBRIDS. they are easier to hit then irons & they go far. everyone one is different therefore everyone has different club tastes.  i have a PING driver (15.5 loft...im gonna get a lower loft soon though).  i suggest since you are new that you get a high lofted driver (13-15.5 loft).  also you may want to try out HYBORE irons (CLEVELAND makes them)

    hope i helped :]

ps- clubs are expensive, but its better to have clubs you like, then to suffer with bad clubs  :] (cobra, titleist, ping, callaway, & cleveland are all great names)  go to a golf store and ask for clubs for beginners, they will help you out :]

  2. Go get measured, then buy custom clubs on ebay.  Since this is your first set of clubs, you don't need any brand name stuff.  You can probably get a full set for less than $200 on ebay.  I've purchased it in the past and they're not too bad for a beginner set.  Golf is a great game, I hope you have lots of success with it.

It takes patience though, don't give up!

  3. You're joining your school's golf team, yet you know nothing about the sport.  Hmmm!  You thought it would be fun to try.  You may not think that once you start playing.  I say that because golf is a difficult sport to learn.  It would help if you have natural athletic ability so that you can get the timing down required to hit pure shots.  I suggest you go to Wal-Mart and pick up a set of clubs there.  Don't worry about name brands at this point.  A full set has a driver(the big headed club you will hit the fartherst), A 3 & 5 wood(fairway woods which you may find easier to hit than the driver), irons(3-pw,(3,4,5,6,7,8,9 irons and a pitching wedge)) and a putter.  You will have to get a couple more wedges(sand wedge(sw) and lob wedge(lw)).  It is imperative as you are learning to know how far you hit each club.  As you get better this will change.  When I first started, I couldn't hit a driver 140 yards.  I've been playing for 8 years or so and can hit it in the air 100 yards farther than that now.  To start off, don't hit more than a 5 iron.  Use a tee as often as you can.  You can only use a tee on tee shots though.  Although, I have never taken a lesson, I always suggest that people do.  Not everybody has my patience.  I'd rather do the trial and error thing.  Pick up some golf magazines and books to supplement what your teacher shows you.

  4. i would take a lesson or two before you go out and just start hitting balls.  This way you wont develop bad habits.

  5. Here are some free lessons.

  6. Go to a golf shop or a good sporting good store to get a set of clubs.   Figure at least $200 for a decent set.   Putters are sold seperately.   Find one that feels good as feel is the key to putting.

A 3 iron is used for long shots;  a 9 iron is used for short shots, about 100 yds for a beginner.   Start by practicing with your 9, then 8, then 7...etc.   Tee off with your 3-wood as the 1-wood(call the Driver) is very tough to hit, even for decent golfers.   Focus on making good contact and hitting it straight; the distance will increase as you get better.    A Lesson or two from a pro will do wonders.
